With that same Russian Lubitel as used in the previous picture, I started to experiment with light and shutter speed. In this particular case it was a flash light in a very dark room. I badly wanted a dark if not completely black background so that nothing would distract from the facial expression. In a way that is still my approach to a portrait, although my lighting may have become a little more sophisticated. (1976)

This is one of my first serious attempts at making a photograph of a person I cared for deeply, using a Russian Lubitel 6×6 camera. It is obvious I still had a lot to learn, but this photograph of my girlfriend back in 1978 is still very dear to me.

Throughout my career I have photographed an awful lot of people who defy social conventions when it comes to male and female behavior. This picture I just found, dated 1978, is from my first photo shoot with a transvestite ever. A very straight forward picture taken with a flash mounted to my camera, but it is obvious that my fascination with the subject is already very much alive.
